The chair congratulates this year's Moot Court team
Yamuna Bochmann, Malte Meyer and Tabea Schicktanz formed the team for the eleventh round of the Human Rights Moot Court in 2022/2023. They first developed their arguments in briefs and then refined them in intensive trial pleadings. In the oral phase of the competition, they were able to compete with other teams from all over Europe in Maastricht. They were supported by Eva Frenz, research assistant at the chair.

ELSA Human Rights Moot Court enters the next round
The English-language ELSA Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition simulates a hearing before the European Court of Human Rights based on a fictitious case. Team members can spend a semester intensively studying human rights and the proceedings before the ECtHR while improving their foreign language skills. Students from Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg will again participate in the tenth round of the ELSA Human Rights Moot Court. The team consists of Belana Homann, Elias Zeltner, Tim Borrmann and Manuel Klein and has been working on the new case since September.
Elias Zeltner: "Climate change poses a global threat to human rights. Jurisprudence is playing an increasingly important role in this context. It is all the more exciting to now be able to deal with this topic at first hand. We can expect important decisions from the ECtHR on this topic in the coming years as well."
Manuel Klein: "This year's Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition revolves around state responsibility to protect human rights in the face of the climate crisis and its consequences. We could not have asked for a more timely and exciting topic. I am delighted to be part of this year's team!"
Tim Borrmann: "The HPMCC is an exciting challenge to learn about the regional human rights protection system around the ECHR in a practical and competitive way. This year's case is highly topical and an exposure to it is very timely. All in all, a nice way to add variety to everyday study."
Belana Homann: "The Moot Court offers the unique opportunity to deal intensively with literature, case law, and the legal systems of other countries in English, thereby improving one's own language skills and broadening one's understanding of legal work."
We wish good luck!

ELSA Human Rights Moot Court team pleads in digital preliminary round in Maastricht
After the Moot Court team submitted the submissions in December, the Regional Round took place in Maastricht from February 5 to 8, 2021. The preliminary round, organized by the ELSA local group, included not only the two online pleadings but also a colorful social program with exciting lectures, for example on Strategic Human Rights Litigation, and casual digital get-to-know-you sessions. In preparation, the team had already been practicing online in internal mock trials since January. Despite their remarkable performance, the team missed out on making it to the final round. We would like to thank the team for their commitment and wish them all the best for their future studies!
The ELSA Human Rights Moot Court goes into the next round
Also this year, students of the Law Faculty of MLU Halle-Wittenberg participate in the ELSA Human Right Moot Court Competition. Supervised by the chair of Prof. Dr. Dirk Hanschel, they are working on a fictitious case before the European Court of Human Rights.
Leah Muders and Henrike Cremer, who both study in the 3rd semester, as well as Alexis Reimann, who studies in the 7th semester, are looking forward to the challenges of the coming months: "The European Convention on Human Rights is an outstanding achievement in defending the dignity of all Europeans. This semester, we get a unique chance to dive deep into this important topic and, most importantly, learn practical advocacy skills in a simulated court case."
We wish all the best for the processing!
