Studium in Halle
Overview
Semester dates
The academic year has two semesters. Classes for the winter semester start in the second week of October and end in the second week of February.
Classes for the summer semester start in the ssecond week of April and go on till mid July.
Exams usually take place in the first two weeks of the lecture-free period (semester break).
Application and Enrolment
On information how to apply to the MLU please view the information of the main ERASMUS-Office here.
Please note: The University's Main ERASMUS Office (INTERNATIONAL OFFICE) is hosting an orientation and welcoming meeting before the start of each semester. Please try to attend the meeting as your matriculation/enrollment will be prepared and you will be provided with helpful information about the university and life in Halle.
Lectures and classes at the Law School
Lectures (Vorlesungen)
The overwhelming majority of classes at the Law School are held in a lecture format. The lectures are usually held by a professor - most of them prefer an open and interactive style, which mean questions and comments by the participants are welcomed and expected.
The lectures (as well as most other classes) start "cum tempore" - Latin for "with time", short c.t. - indicating that the class starts 15 mins after the stated time. For example, if a class announced for 10 - 12 a.m., it will in fact start at 10:15 a.m. and end at 11:45 a.m.. If the class is supposed to start without the 15 mins delay, you will find the addition "s.t." - Latin "sine tempore", without time. Exams always start without a 15 min delay.
As a general rule, attendance for the lectures is not compulsory. However, we recommend to all students to regularly attend the lectures that they would like to be assessed in.
Registration for the class on Stud.IP ist not necessary but recommended as most course material can be found online.
Arbeitsgemeinschaften/Kolloquien
The "Arbeitsgemeinschaften" are classes held by research assistants. In smaller groups of 20 - 30 students the lecture subjects are recapped. In contrast to the lectures where the material is presented in an abstract manner, in the Arbeitsgemeinschaft you will learn how to apply the abtract knowledge to a concrete case.
Übungen
"Übungen" are classes for advanced students. They are similar to "Arbeitsgemeinschaften" but held by a professor. German students have to pass several Übungen to be eligible for the First State Exam. Since a basic knowledge of the law and case solving technique is required, these classes are not recommended to Erasmus students.
Seminars (Seminare)
Seminars are the most research heavy classes at the Law School. Students have to prepare a research paper of about 25 pages that are then discussed in a smaller group together with a professor.
Student tutors (Tutorien)
At the beginning of the winter semester all first year students are assigned to student tutors. The tutors give orientation and assist the students with their studies and life in Halle - for example how to use the library, how to get Wifi around campus, what books to study with, what cafés to hang out at, where to go out. Erasmus students are very welcome to join the tutoring groups. It's also a great opportunity to meet German students.
**You can find a Guide for Incoming Students of the Faculty of Law in the menu on the right side ("documents"). It explains everything you need to know about choosing courses, ECTS and so on.**
Courses of the Master-Programmes and at other Schools
Courses of the Master-Programmes
The MLU Law School offers two interesting LL.M. programmes: Medicine-Ethics-Law and International Economic Law. Erasmus students are welcome to take courses of the master programmes, but you will not be able to obtain a degree.
Courses at other departments
Above this, Erasmus students can take modules from other departments - especially the Business School. Please be sure to let us know prior to your arrival if you intend to earn credits at other departments.
Course Catalogue
An online course catalogue of the entire university can be found at the web portal Stud.IP under http://studip.uni-halle.de/mlu_vv.php.
[Offizielle Lehrveranstaltungen > Suche im Vorlesungsverzeichnis > Juristische und wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät > Juristischer Bereich – Law School]
Please be aware that the classes only show up on Stud.IP about two months prior to the start of the semester. However, the course range of the previous winter- or summer term can serve as guidance. Please don't hesitate to ask us if you need to find out if a specific course is offered.
Assessment - Exams
Exams are usually held in the two last weeks before the beginning of the lecture free period.
There is no assessment in the "Arbeitsgemeinschaften". For all other courses, exams can be held in written or oral format.
It is your responsibility to approach the lecturer in due time to arrange when and how you will be assessed.
Language Requirements
The majority of classes at the Law School are held in German. Previous German knowledge is therefore an asset. Apart from these there also exist some courses held in English each semester. These courses mainly have an economic law background.
The University Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers a variety of free of charge German (and other language) courses on beginners and advanced levels.
For more information, please refer to their \link{{Sprachabteilungen}}{Language Courses}.
In addition, you can find ourself a language buddy in the "Tandem-Programm" organized by the tutors of the International Office. For more information click here.
